Wheel Selection for Triathletes

“Which wheels are best for me?” is by far the most asked question I receive. Wheel selection can be overwhelming. There are so many options. So, if you’re reading this and wondering, “which wheels are best for me?” I got you.

Front Wheel

A front wheel has a steering axis allowing the wheel to turn. FLO wheels are designed to be stable but when a wheel is not fixed in the frame, outside influences like crosswind can turn the wheel unexpectedly. For this reason, you want to pick a front wheel that you can handle in all weather conditions.

For most triathletes, the front FLO 64 AS is the golden ticket. If you want the nitty gritty on the FLO 64 AS, check out this blog article

Why not deeper? I’m here to burst the misconception that deeper is faster. Yes, it may be true on paper, but what really matters is how well you can stay in the TT position. A deeper wheel, like the FLO 77 AS, is more prone to crosswinds, potentially making you feel less stable. Coming out of the aero position costs you more time than what a deeper front wheel will save you.

Now, if crosswinds don’t bother you and you’re an experienced rider, the FLO 77 AS would be a good choice.

Consider a front FLO 49 AS if you are very sensitive to crosswinds or you weigh less than 110 lbs.

But, 9 times out of 10, triathletes select the front FLO 64 AS

Rear Wheel

The rear wheel is fixed in the frame and is not impacted by crosswinds, like a front wheel. Fortriathletes, we suggest a staggered approach. A deeper rear wheel when compared to the front wheel helps stabilize the front wheel by moving the center of pressure towards the back of the bike. Therefore, go deep!

If you’re going to choose one rear wheel- choose the rear FLO 77 AS. It’s deep, stable, and versatile. Use it for training and racing. Win, win.

A secondary, less versatile rear wheel option is the FLO DISC. It’s the fastest wheel from A to B but recommended for racing only.

If you fell into the bucket of having a shallow front, like the FLO 49 AS, or road racing is your main discipline, you may consider a rear FLO 64 AS
